Our Language and Speech Services

Our Language and Speech (LAS) services are designed to meet the individual needs of all students. Our Speech & Language Pathologists (SLPs) are highly experienced in meeting the needs of K-12 students and are available to provide services for all student populations.

We focus on personalized therapy plans.Our licensed SLPs work to enhance communication and language skills. All of our services include collaboration, consultation and resource sharing with educational staff!

K-12 Common Speech-Language Difficulties

A language disorder can be described as difficulty in receiving, understanding, and formulating ideas and information.

It may impact receptive language skills, expressive language skills, or both. It may be related to another disability or it may be a specific language disorder.

Types of Language Difficulties

Phonological
Difficulty in discriminating differences in speech sounds or sound segments.
Morphological
Difficulty using the structure of words to get or give information.
Syntactical errors
Difficulty involving word order, incorrect structure, misuse of negatives, or omitting structures.
Semantic
Difficulty using words singly or together in sentences.
Pragmatic
Difficulty in the social use of language.
Articulation and Phonology
Difficulty with speech sound production, such as substitutions, omissions, additions, distortions.
Fluency
Difficulty with the flow of speech, i.e. stuttering
Functional Communication: “Refers to the use of language, gestures, or other methods to convey needs, wants, and thoughts effectively. It encompasses verbal and non-verbal communication, ensuring individuals can express themselves clearly in various contexts. This skill set includes requesting items, expressing feelings, and asking questions.

Types of Therapy Strategies & Techniques

Language Development

  • play-based therapy to support expanding language and social skills with younger students
  • social skills groups supporting pragmatic language skills
  • modeling and expanding verbal language through self and parallel talk
  • teaching and practicing vocabulary and comprehension strategies such as semantic mapping, context clues, visualization, and making connections

Articulation and Phonology

  • speech sound placement instruction or drill practice and modeling at various levels 
  • carryover/generalization support 
  • phonological cycles approach
  • fluency education 
  • modification and enhancing techniques

Functional Communication and AAC

  • modeling and implementing use of no, low, and high tech AAC
  • creating opportunities for requesting, protesting, etc.
  • creating age-appropriate materials and activities

Creating and providing visuals

Creating and providing visuals to support students during therapy sessions and in the classroom, e.g. visual functional communication supports, visual schedules, visual expectations and reminders, etc.

We also have therapists who can provide family-based services and early intervention services. We also have some therapists who are fluent in ASL.
